In 1993, Taewon started his career in gaming by dropping out of his Ph.D course in Engineering from the most prestigious university in Korea and then becoming a game designer for Land of Dangun, the very first commercial Text MUD (Multi-User-Dungeon) game in South Korea. His starting salary was around USD 300. Per Annum. Taewon did the jump as he was deeply passionate about and believed in the future of gaming in networked online games with social engagement. Text MUD is the pre-cursor of modern MMORPG games (some may argue that it is the first form of Metaverse).
Taewon has always been at the frontline of transforming game industry. He led LiveOps operation for Ultima Online, the first modern MMORPG with worldwide fame. He built the business model, market entry strategy and Live Ops infrastructure for World of Warcraft as well as running Live Operations of all Blizzard titles, inclusive of Starcraft 1 & 2, Diablo 3 in Korea and China. At Wargaming, he built Wargaming’s entire Asia Pacific operation as the first Managing Director. As the Chief Business Officer of Super Evil Megacorp, Taewon has been in charge of product roadmap, corporate strategy, business development and global partnerships. Super Evil Megacorp is currently building multiple unannounced cross-platform online games in partnership with global gaming superpowers including NetFlix.
Taewon also advises some of the top up-and-coming startup developers in Web3 and AI including Worldwide Webb. He believes that Crypto winter is a blessing in disguise for Web3 industry as it weeds out unsustainable projects and he’s beyond excited to be a part of Worldwide Webb’s journey to build living and breathing MMO.
